Arsenal hold firm against Brighton to restore title lead

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table after edging past Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 in a tense encounter at the Emirates Stadium, showing resilience as much as quality in a title race that continues to intensify.

Having briefly been knocked off the summit earlier in the day by Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side knew only a win would restore their advantage. They responded positively, starting the match with energy and control, pinning Brighton back in their own half during the opening exchanges.

The breakthrough arrived inside the first quarter of an hour. A lapse in Brighton’s build up allowed Bukayo Saka to seize possession and the winger showed composure to tee up Martin Ødegaard. Given time and space on the edge of the area the Arsenal captain unleashed a powerful, low drive that arrowed into the bottom corner, underlining his growing influence in big moments.

Arsenal dominated the remainder of the first half and should have gone into the break with a greater cushion. Bart Verbruggen was forced into a sharp save to deny Martin Zubimendi, while Leandro Trossard blazed over against his former club. Those missed chances would later add the home side’s anxiety.

The Gunners eventually found a second goal early in the second half, albeit with a slice of fortune. Declan Rice’s in swinging corner caused chaos in the Brighton box and Georgina Rutter, attempting to clear under pressure could only divert the ball into his own net.

At 2-0 Arsenal appeared comfortable but the contest shifted unexpectedly. Brighton reduced the deficit just after the hour when Diego Gomez reached quickest to smash home after Yasin Ayari’s effort struck the post. The visitors and nerves into the stands.

Brighton pushed for an equalizer and Arsenal were indebted to David Raya, who produced an outstanding stretching save to deny Yankuba Minteh. At the other end, Gabriel Martinelli missed a late chance to seal the game ensuring a nervous finale.

Despite fielding a reshuffled defense with Declan Rice filling in at right back after a late injury to Riccardo Calafiori Arsenal held firm. The victory marked their sixth consecutive Premier League home win and sent them two points clear at the top once again.

It was not a perfect performance but in a title race defined by fine margins, Arsenal showed they can win even when control slips a trait champions often need.
